This week’s quote is from The Guns Above, a Steampunk book about Airships.

As they approached the squat medical building, Bernat saw the crew prospects teeming at the door. “If this business is so dangerous,” he asked Jutes, “why are there so many volunteers?”

“You have to die of something, don’t you? And if it’s gonna be in the army, might as well be the Aerial Signal Corps, where the pay’s high and the girls in town hang on every word of your war stories.” He grinned. “Besides which, promotion here is faster than anywhere else in the service, on account of positions opening up so often.”

Full review up next week!

Friday 56 – The Tropic of Serpents

Today’s quote is from The Tropic of Serpents, the second book of The Memoirs of Lady Trent. I’ll be doing a full series review shortly!

“I have not kidnapped her, my lord,” I said, covering up my nervousness with irritation. In his distress, he had not yet thought to ask me outright whether I had seen his daughter. If he did, I would have to make up my mind whether to lie, and a sleepless night of pondering that very question had failed to supply me with an answer.

I should perhaps mention that the daughter in question is an adult woman! (As is the person speaking in this quote.) So far this is an excellent series, I’m eager to see how it all turns out.

Friday 56 – Smoke Eaters

It’s almost July, so I’m reading a book about hot things! In this case, dragons and fire fighters! Smoke Eaters came out in March, and I’ve been on the lookout for it since. I spotted it at my library and snapped it up, and so far, it’s great!

DeShawn followed me outside where a big, black fire apparatus waited. It looked almost like an aerial ladder truck, but instead of a ladder, a huge laser cannon sat on top. The black paint glistened in the sun, and instead of the standard red and white lights, the truck had been outfitted with green and purple strobes and beacons. On the side of the truck, the words “Sink or Swim” had been painted in green.

The lady smoke eater from the day before hopped out of the captain’s seat while the black man with red eyes circled from the driver’s side. They’d substituted their power suits and helmets for the green smoke eater dress shirt and navy blue duty pants.

Review will be up as soon as I finish it!

Friday 56 – Before The Storm

Today’s quote is from Before The Storm, the latest World of Warcraft novel. (Yes, I play. In fact I have a max-level character of every class….I really love this world!)

“Mind if we have a bit of company?” Moira asked as they rose and left the table.

“Of course; anyone you like.”

The queen spoke quietly with one of the guards, who nodded and stepped out. A few minutes later, he returned, escorting a little dwarf boy. The child’s skin was an unusual but appealingly warm shade of gray. His eyes were large and green, holding no hint of the red glow common to the Dark Iron dwarves, and his hair was white. Anduin knew at once who it had to be: Moira’s son, Magni Bronzebeard’s grandson, and the heir to the throne, Prince Dagran.

The book largely centers on Anduin, the King of Stormwind and head of the Alliance. He used to be my Prince, and now he’s my King. (RIP Varian, you will be missed.) I’ve always adored Anduin, so to read a book mostly centered on him was a pleasure. Full review will be coming up sometime in July – by August 12 at the latest!

*****

Aside from the Friday 56, today is my amazing husband’s birthday! He turns 29 today, and I adore him just as much as I did when we met, 14 years ago. Happy Birthday, love!

Friday 56 – Seriously…I’m Kidding

Today’s quote is from Seriously…I’m Kidding by Ellen DeGeneres. This book is hysterical and random!

I once went into work and showed some producers a little bruise I got. The next thing I knew it was like Girls Gone Wild in my office. People were lifting up their shirts, rolling up their pants. Socks were coming off. “you think that’s bad – I walked into a tree yesterday!” “I banged my hip on a car door!” “I sat on a fork!” Don’t need to see it.

This is one of my reads for Pride Month, and the review should be up in a few days!

Friday 56 – Island of Exiles

Right now I’m reading Island of Exiles, which is really cool because bi/pansexuality is considered the norm, and there are three genders – male, female, and ebet, whose pronouns are ey/eir/em. It’s a great book to read for Pride Month!

This little exchange is between the main character and her brother.

“Why are we out here?” Yorri asks as we move. “Do you have a plan?”

“Yes. I’m going to teach you how to be silent.”

Yorri raises an eyebrow. “You’re going to kill me?”

I laugh, and then laugh harder when he rolls his eyes, barely able to suppress his smirk. “Maybe I should,” I taunt. “It might be easier.”

This book is really fun so far!
